Currentzis accepted, on two conditions. The first was that if he became artistic director of Perm’s opera and ballet, he would be allowed to uproot his MusicAeterna orchestra and chorus from Siberia and bring them with him. The second was that Perm would pay for both ensembles to be expanded to full-scale symphonic scale. The governor agreed to both conditions. There were just two problems. Perm Opera already had its own orchestra and chorus. And nobody had told them about the governor’s deal with Currentzis.

“Yes, that is literally true,” de Mauny confirms. “The previous artistic director was given notice very abruptly. And although the theatre’s manager knew what was going to happen, for whatever reason he didn’t communicate the information to anyone else in the theatre. So one fine day Teodor turned up — like snow out of a blue sky, as the Russians say — with an orchestra and chorus at a theatre that already had both.”

That must have been a tense moment. “It was tricky,” de Mauny says with a sigh. “And of course it didn’t help that the MusicAeterna musicians were younger, better paid and, well, just better.”

That was in 2011. The next three or four years were spent trying to schedule both sets of musicians so as to keep the regular repertoire of the theatre going while trying to accommodate Currentzis’s penchant for big projects, “spontaneous” midnight happenings, glamorous foreign tours and recordings.

“Teodor never chooses the easy route,” de Mauny says. “For four or five years we tried to run the two orchestras side by side. Now we are in a different phase. Teodor has decided basically to amalgamate both to create one super-orchestra that will be called MusicAeterna. Of course that will involve re-auditioning musicians from the second orchestra. Some will stay, some be replaced.”
